How to Ace Your Design College Interview: Questions, Portfolio Tips and Mistakes to Avoid

Design school interviews test curiosity, thinking and communication — not memorised answers. Here are the questions you're likely to face and how to prepare with your portfolio.

For many design programmes — especially M.Des after CEED, and several B.Des admissions — a personal interview is part of the final round. It can feel scary, but a design interview is really a conversation about how you think. Panels want to know: Are you curious? Can you explain your ideas? Will you thrive in a design school?

What the panel is really assessing

  • Curiosity — Do you notice things and ask "why"?
  • Clarity — Can you explain your work simply?
  • Honesty — Do you know your strengths and gaps?
  • Motivation — Why design, and why this specialisation?
  • Thinking process — How do you go from a problem to an idea?

Common design interview questions

  1. "Tell us about yourself." Keep it to a minute: your background, what got you interested in design, and what you enjoy making.
  2. "Why do you want to study design?" Give a real, personal reason — a moment or a project — not "I've always been creative."
  3. "Why this specialisation?" Show you understand what people in that field actually do.
  4. "Walk us through this project." Explain the problem, your process, what didn't work and what you learnt.
  5. "What is a well-designed object you use every day? Why?" Prepare 2–3 examples and think about users, materials and details.
  6. "What would you improve about this room / this chair / this app?" Think aloud — they want to see your process.
  7. "Which designers or designs inspire you?" Mention a few you genuinely know about, including Indian designers and crafts.
  8. "What do you do outside studies?" Hobbies often reveal design sensibility — cooking, music, gaming, sport, photography all count.

Your portfolio: the centre of the conversation

Most of the interview will revolve around your portfolio. Make sure:

  • You can explain every piece — why you made it and what you'd change.
  • You show process, not just final work: sketches, failed ideas, iterations.
  • Your best work comes first, and the whole thing takes 5–10 minutes to walk through.

Body language and communication

  • Make eye contact and smile — panels are people too.
  • Pause before answering difficult questions. It's fine to say "Let me think about that."
  • If you don't know something, say so honestly and show how you'd find out.
  • Don't memorise answers word for word. It sounds rehearsed.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Claiming work that isn't fully yours (they'll ask detailed questions).
  • Criticising other institutes or people.
  • Talking only about marks and ranks.
  • Giving one-word answers.
  • Not knowing anything about the institute's programmes.

How to practise

  1. Record yourself answering the questions above and watch it back.
  2. Do at least two mock interviews with someone who has design experience.
  3. Practise presenting your portfolio to family members who know nothing about design — if they understand it, a panel will too.
