UCEED vs CEED: What's the Difference and Which Should You Take?
UCEED and CEED are both conducted by IIT Bombay — but they're for very different students. Compare eligibility, programmes, pattern and preparation in one place.
Students and parents often confuse UCEED and CEED — the names are almost the same and both are run by IIT Bombay. The simple difference:
- UCEED is for students after Class 12, for B.Des (undergraduate).
- CEED is for students after graduation, for M.Des (postgraduate) and some PhD programmes.

How the exams differ
UCEED
UCEED Part A is longer and carries more weight; it focuses on visualisation, spatial reasoning, observation, logic and language. Part B tests drawing and design aptitude. Admission depends on your UCEED rank. → Full UCEED guide
CEED
CEED Part A screens candidates; Part B is checked only if you clear the Part A cut-off. Part B includes drawing, creativity and problem-identification questions. After that, each institute conducts its own shortlisting, often with a portfolio review and interview — so your portfolio really matters. → Full CEED guide
Which should you take?
- In Class 11 or 12? You'll take UCEED (plus NID DAT and NIFT if they fit your interests).
- In your final year of graduation or working? You'll take CEED.
- Did a B.Des already? CEED leads to M.Des if you want to specialise.
- Engineering or architecture graduate? CEED is a great way to switch into design.
Can I skip B.Des and go straight to M.Des?
Yes. Many M.Des students come from engineering, architecture, fine arts or other backgrounds. A design undergrad isn't required — but a good portfolio and strong design thinking are.
